FAQs

Whether you’re a member of the Canadian Armed Forces community or everyday Canadian looking to get involved, this page will help you learn more about Support Our Troops and its programs.
Support Our Troops is the official charitable cause of the Canadian Armed Forces and a qualified donee of His Majesty the King in right of Canada. It is administered by Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services.

Major elements within Support Our Troops include its disbursement of loans and grants to members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) community, philanthropic fundraising initiatives, and corporate community engagement and partnerships.

Support Our Troops provides direct financial support and assistance to CAF members, veterans and their respective families in a number of important and often life-changing ways that are not provided by core public funding.

As a qualified donee, under the Income Tax Act, Support Our Troops follows CRA guidelines like other charitable organizations and issues charitable tax receipts for donations. Click here to read more.
No, Canada Revenue Agency does not assign a charitable number for organizations designated as qualified donees. Under the Income Tax Act, “His Majesty the King in the Right of Canada” is a “qualified donee” and as such can issue official tax deductible charitable donation receipts for gifts received.

Any donation to Support Our Troops is deemed to be a gift to the Crown (His Majesty in right of Canada as represented by the Chief of the Defence Staff acting in his Non-Public capacity as provided in Sections 38 to 41 of the National Defence Act through the Support Our Troops Fund). Accordingly, Support Our Troops Official Income Tax Receipts are issued as an acknowledgement of a “gift to the Crown” for donations that individuals and corporations make to them.

Support Our Troops operates within the Non-Public Property (NPP) accountability framework that has its foundation in the National Defence Act (NDA), Sections 2 and 38-41 and is governed by the Non-Public Property Board, chaired by the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS).

Support Our Troops exists as part of a suite of NPP activities that are vested in the Chief of the Defence Staff and exist to provide benefit to the members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), former members of the CAF and the families of both.
Support Our Troops operates within Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS).

The Non-Public Property Board is an advisory board to assist the Chief of the Defence Staff in his governance responsibilities for Non-Public Property (NPP). The NPP Board provides the overall strategic direction for all activities associated with Non-Public Funds. The Board financially oversees the operation of NPP, approves policies for the operation of NPP activities and provides policy direction for the Canadian Forces Central Fund (CFCF), established as the central fund of all NPP activities.

Like hospitals and schools that receive funding from external sources, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) appreciates the generosity of individuals and companies that support the distinctive requirements and individual circumstances that arise for members and their families due to the conditions of military service.

Programs to offset the stresses and challenges associated with active service are supported by donations from individuals (11%) and corporations (8%), foundations (17%), third-party community fundraising events (18%), CAF signature events (Army Run, Navy Bike Ride, and the Air Force Run) (21%), proceeds from sales (20%), and Yellow Ribbon merchandise sales and partnerships (5%). Support Our Troops receives no government funding or grants.
Yes, Canadians can use the Yellow Ribbon when they are conducting a community fundraising initiative in support of CAF members and their families. Permission to use the trademark is required.
