Helping kids shine: Tutoring support makes learning enjoyable for CAF family

With two young learners facing military life, the DesRoches family found vital support through Support Our Troops’ National Tutoring Program, showing how educational stability helps CAF families.

For military spouse, Jordan DesRoches and her husband, Cpl Cole DesRoches, ensuring their children receive the support they need in school has always been a priority. But with classroom resources stretched thin and both children being neurodivergent learners, who don’t always “fit the box,” of traditional learning, the family found that accessing the extra help their sons required wasn’t always possible.

That changed this year when their children became first‑time recipients of the Support Our Troops National Tutoring Program.

Jordan describes the impact as immediate and meaningful. “The program has helped reduce a fair amount of stress,” she explains. “With staffing shortages and school board decisions, the extra help our kids need doesn’t often happen in school. The additional support required was a possibility we didn’t think we would be able to provide. We are extremely grateful.”

Having access to a certified private tutor allowed both boys to receive consistent, individualized attention. The program also eased the financial pressure that often accompanies navigating both military life and the additional costs related to supporting learners with a disability.

Despite the unpredictability that can come with CAF service, the family has worked hard to prioritize stability in their children’s education. Moves and postings have been manageable, and when the CAF requires more from Cole, the family adapts with creativity and resilience.

“Even when we’re not at home, we always find ways to learn,” Jordan adds.

Still, the reassurance of knowing tutoring support is available has made a profound difference.

The Support Our Troops National Tutoring Program exists for families like the DesRoches. Families navigating the realities of military life while striving to ensure their children receive the educational foundation they deserve. For the DeRoches children, that support has translated into more confidence, stronger routines, and a learning environment where they can truly thrive.Desroches-family-1.jpg
