Scotiabank helps military kids connect through Personnel Support Programs (PSP) summer day camps

Military families who participated in the program expressed experiencing peace of mind and a sense of normalcy at home. Read about Scotiabank’s key role in supporting PSP camps.

During the summer months, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members leverage Personnel Support Programs (PSP) summer day camp as a part of their family care plan. Parks and recreation play a critical role in the mental and physical health recovery of citizens and play an equally important role in community economic revival.

Last summer, PSP offered 107 weeks of camp at 13 locations. Scotiabank invested $50,000 in the program, which allowed 35 professionals with special needs training to be hired and 102 children from military families to enjoy the experience of summer camp.

“We are proud to assist Support Our Troops by bringing together military families and resources for children with special needs in a fun atmosphere like summer camp,” says Sandra Odendahl, Scotiabank's Vice President of Social Impact & Sustainability. “At Scotiabank, we believe diversity makes us stronger, at every age. Which is why we’re so passionate about creating a camp environment that is free of barriers and open and accessible to all military families.”

Though this year’s cohort of campers was smaller than previous years’ due to COVID-19, the response we have received from participating families regarding the peace of mind and sense of normalcy they were able to reinstall in their homes thanks to this program has been tremendous.

"My son Chase has attended a PSP summer camp every single year in Shilo. When we first started going to the Active Skillz camp, he had no friends and was often teased. I know he wasn’t the easiest kid to handle, but to watch him flourish throughout the summers and make friends has been absolutely amazing!”

Thanks to Scotiabank's generous gift, military families across Canada can look forward to participating in the PSP Summer Camp Program.
