A legacy of generosity: How an exemplary Canadian is standing with our troops

Gord Tallman learned the values of community and giving back at a young age.

Growing up in a family that had very little, especially after his father’s death, friends and neighbours were always welcome in their home and during mealtimes. One of his mother’s most commendable traits was her generosity, which Gord exemplifies in many ways.

The importance of family has greatly inspired the Tallman family’s generosity. Concerning the Canadian military community, Gord wants to ensure that families receive the support they need when their loved ones are both at home and away.

Like many Canadians, Gord has a familial connection to the armed forces. Serving as a front-line member of the Black Watch Royal Highlander Regiment during World War II, Gord’s father, Private Guy Tallman, fought and was wounded in the Battle of Verrières Ridge in France.

Gord became involved with Support Our Troops in 2014 after hearing the news of Corporal Nathan Cirillo’s death at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. He felt compelled to demonstrate his solidarity with the families of the brave women and men who defend our country.

“It’s not only financial support, but also the feeling that other people understand your situation and want to help. It’s knowing that Canadians are standing behind you,” says Gord.

Over the years Gord has become deeply connected to Support Our Troops and its mandate to build family resiliency. What began as his family’s annual donation has evolved into their participation in the Canada Army Run every year and committing to a legacy gift – in their wills - that will impact the lives of our troops for years to come.

As a long-standing ambassador for Support Our Troops, Gord hopes his ongoing commitment to empowering military families in need will continue the Tallman legacy of generosity and inspire others to stand with our troops.
